Oceans of Possibilities
2022 All Ages Summer Reading Experience
June 1st - August 13th

Kent County Public Library invites everyone to join the 2022 Oceans of Possibilities summer reading experience!

KCPL’s summer reading experience includes reading challenges for all ages – babies through adults – as well as 8 weeks full of programs and events. Everyone who joins us will have opportunities to win prizes, create connections, and celebrate reading.

We welcome all levels of participation! Register for a reading challenge, then spend the summer reading whatever you choose while logging reading minutes to win prizes and to contribute to KCPL’s collaborative summer reading goal. Join us for a single event or come to programs every week to try new things, get creative, learn amazing information, and more.

Details about our collaborative summer reading goal and how to register for a reading challenge are below! Information about all the summer events, including locations and links for registration, can be found in our online calendar.

2022 Collaborative Summer Reading Goal

In 2021, Kent County Public Library’s summer reading goal was 250,000 minutes and the response was incredible – hundreds of readers of all ages participated and they more than doubled the goal by logging 569,732 minutes!

This year we’re going even bigger. We have tripled the summer reading goal and are challenging our community to the collective, collaborative goal of reading: 750,000 minutes!

To reach this goal, we need the whole community to help!

Why Is Summer Reading Important for Kids?

While all ages are invited to join the fun, participating in KCPL’s summer reading experience can help kids start the next school year ready to pick up where they left off instead of needing to re-learn skills and information due to the "summer slide."

For more information, check out the National Summer Learning Association's Summer by the Numbers infographic for tips on preventing the summer slide.

In-Person Registration

Join us at a Summer Reading Kickoff Event on June 22nd or 25th to register for summer reading, get a printed reading log, and to pick up a swag bag of summer goodies, including a FREE t-shirt (available while supplies last).

Starting June 25th, you can register in-person and pick up a printed reading log at any KCPL location whenever the library is open.

Track Your Reading Minutes

The race toward 750,000 minutes starts on June 22nd! This is the day you can start tracking your reading minutes.

Minutes can be tracked online using Beanstack or on a paper log sheet you can pick up at any KCPL location starting on June 22nd.

The more you read and log your reading minutes, the more chances you have to earn prizes for yourself and to help us reach our goal of 750,000 minutes read by the community! If you're reading aloud together as a family or group, remember that each person can log those minutes for their own challenge.

All minutes must be submitted to KCPL by August 11th, 2022 to be counted!

To make sure your minutes are counted, share your paper reading log with library staff by the time the library closes on August 11th or enter your minutes into the Beanstack app by 11:59pm.

At our Summer Reading Finale on August 13th, we'll announce whether or not we've hit the 750,000 minutes read goal!

Beanstack Mobile App

If you’re logging your minutes online, check out the Beanstack app!

The Beanstack app is available for all mobile devices. Find it in the App Store or on Google Play.

Enter Raffle Drawings

Readers participating in the Preschool, Kids, and Teen Summer Reading Challenges can use their virtual raffle tickets to enter drawings for AMAZING prizes!

The more minutes logged, the more raffle tickets earned! Tickets are received for every hour of reading logged and readers can choose which raffle drawings to enter. You can spend your tickets all on one prize to increase your chances of winning a specific prize or spread them out over multiple prizes.

It's easy to find out how many tickets you have and choose which raffles you want to enter. If you're logging your minutes online, log in to Beanstack and click on "Ticket Drawings." If you're logging your minutes offline, bring your paper reading log to any KCPL location and talk with library staff who can show you a printed list of raffle prizes and place your virtual tickets into the raffles of your choice.

Friday, August 12th is the last day to enter raffle drawings.

Raffle winners will be announced at the Summer Reading Finale in Chestertown on Saturday, August 13th. You do not need to be present to win, but we do hope to see you there!

Participants in the Adult Reading Challenge do NOT earn raffle tickets, but do have the opportunity to turn their reading minutes into KCPL Bucks for the Marvelous Mystery Auction on Friday, August 12. Be sure to register to reserve your seat at this adults-only event!
